When you think of the culinary arts and pastry chef schools, what state is the first that comes to mind? New York, of course! Some of the best degrees and curriculum’s in the nation can be found in NYC and surrounding areas in the state. However, there are several that have a particularly strong reputation that can give a boost to any resume, regardless of job experience.
Currently there are four colleges that offer students the opportunity to earn a degree or certification in the Pastry Arts. In fact, you will probably recognize some of the names – even if you are unfamiliar with the culinary industry. These institutions include The French Culinary Institute, The Culinary Institute of America (CIA), Niagara County Community College, and Star Career Academy.
Out of all these options, most pastry chef students dream of attending the Culinary Institute of America. However, it is a misconception that the application to the CIA is a difficult process. While you will face a higher level of competition than average, the application requirements are not difficult to meet. When completing the enrollment process, students must:
- Submit proof of a high school diploma or GED
- Obtain the required number of recommendations (vary by program)
- Complete the required assessment test
- Submit proof of at least 6 months of industry related experience. This requirement does not have to be filled immediately, but this experience must be gained before attending classes.
Keep in mind, the courses and pastry chef jobs will be more competitive than average, especially if you live in or near NYC. However, this career can be extremely rewarding and the opportunities can offer unique training and employment experience. If you are willing to put in the work to gain the education and experience, you will have the opportunity to live your dreams – and possibly become a professional executive pastry chef in a high-end restaurant!
