There is only one pastry chef school located in Mississippi that exposes students to this artistic culinary profession involving the both basic and elaborate dessert creation. Coahoma Community College offers students a Career and Technical Division that can help graduating high school students to obtain and education and quickly transition into the workforce. This program is also ideal for adults who are looking to change career paths or add to their existing job experience. Individuals who enter this program will join the Career Division to earn a Culinary Arts Certificate.
Even though this program does have limitations when it comes to the pastry arts (especially if you have lofty educational goals), there are some advantages. Students will not only learn the basics such as mixing and baking, but the coursework also includes pastry creation, American and some international desserts and general hot and cold foods.
Many students worry about a college’s accreditation prior to the application and enrollment process. Currently, Coahoma is fully accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. While this is not as glamorous as having an endorsement from the American Culinary Federation (ACF), this program still provides students with a quality pastry chef courses. And while the goal of this program is to help graduates enter the workforce, there are opportunities to elaborate on your education and skills in the future. However, you will have to look at neighboring states such as Louisiana, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas and Alabama for Associate and Bachelor degree programs.
For some, this opportunity may not be perfect – while other prospective students will find the Certification in Culinary Arts is the perfect educational foundation. But what Mississippi lacks in college diversity, it makes up for in salary. The average pastry chef pay is around $60,000 per year, but can vary based on experience and location.
If you discover this college isn’t right for you, don’t let it discourage your dreams of becoming a pastry chef – there are plenty of other opportunities in surrounding states. But if it is the perfect fit, why not enroll today – and start your classes with the upcoming semester!
