Neither of these institutions can be considered true pastry chef schools, but students can obtain an Associate of Applied Science in the Culinary Arts at either campus. But while the degree is the same, prospective students should make their decision carefully, based on factors that include the core curriculum, tuition cost and additional offerings (such as internships, externships and job placement.)
The culinary courses offered at Eastern Maine Community College can provide students with a well-rounded background in mixing, baking and basic cooking skills. Approximately 96% of graduates earn a salary in the culinary or pastry profession averaging around $32,900, only 6 months after graduation.
York County Community College provides new students with an excellent opportunity to obtain the same type of degree as EMCC, but with some slight variations. The tuition and expenses at this institution are higher, with each year costing approximately $4000 not including financial aid (as compared to EMCC, which has a tuition cost of approximately $1800 per semester.) Coursework includes a specialized class on Baking, Pastry and Desserts, proper mixing and baking of ingredients and use of classical cooking techniques. On completion of this degree students have the option of pursuing a career as a sauté or pastry chef, and have the ability to become a Sous or Executive Chef with additional training and on the job experience.
