Located in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, these two pastry chef schools offer students the opportunity to learn basic culinary skills, the basics of pastry creation and advanced techniques.

For non-traditional and graduating high school students who want to be put on the fast track for this career path, Delgado Community College offers the perfect solution. A certificate in the Pastry Arts can be obtained in less than a year’s time, and consists of only 22 credit hours. Because of the short duration of this program, coursework is highly concentrated – with classes including Baking and Pastry Skills level I and II, specialty decoration and showpiece design, and 640 hours of work experience divided into two segments.

However, this is not the only educational option Delgado offers students. The Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts with a concentration in Pastry Arts is ideal for students who want to pursue mid-level pastry chef careers immediately after graduation. But compared to other opportunities, this institution offers individuals an invaluable learning opportunity.

After completion of the pastry chef courses and hands on training, students enter into and apprenticeship organized with the help of the American Culinary Federation. By working under experienced executive chefs, this program can present opportunities that can not be matched by other traditional certificate, diploma and degree programs. In fact, this training is so extensive; it requires a minimum of 4,000 hours of real world work experience before graduation.

While Delgado offers two excellent learning opportunities, they are not the right fit for everyone. But what other learning opportunities exist for new students or adults who desire to continue their education? The Louisiana Culinary Institute offers a 16 month program where students can earn an AOS in the Culinary Arts with a Pastry Arts Concentration. In this program, courses are focused primarily on baking, dessert creation, learning essential administrative skills (such as cost management, catering and restaurant management) and basic core work – including Math, English and Nutrition.

After graduation, students may wonder if Louisiana can offer a promising career as a professional in this industry. Currently, a majority of graduates are able to find at least an entry level position – with a projected 9% increase in job demand by the year 2018. But what about pastry chef pay? Currently, individuals earn an average of $20,000 per year, but this can vary with education, experience, business type and work location.
