When you think of the culinary arts and restaurant industry in Idaho, images of potatoes may enter your head. But there is more to the food service industry in this state, despite the stereotype! For high schools students and adults who aspire to become a successful pastry chef, attending the College of Southern Idaho can provide you with the education needed to successfully pursue this profession.
There are other culinary schools in Idaho, but only one offers specialized pastry chef courses. Located in Twin Falls, students enter the AS in the Culinary Arts program with a minor in Baking & Pastry Arts. But if you are a prospective student, you may wonder what the career potential is in this industry – especially with the limited educational options.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Idaho employs 115,000 chefs (which includes pastry chefs and head cooks). This employment statistic may not appear overly promising at first, but you should consider the 8% growth rate (through 2016) for this profession. Once students gain their degree, pastry chef jobs can often be found in major cities such as Boise, Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Twin Falls.
The degree program offered by the College of Southern Idaho is fully accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), which is nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Most students are able to complete coursework in four semesters, which includes an internship (between the second and third semesters), and hands on training on the Desert Cafeteria – a full service restaurant located on campus.
