1. Dessert is your favorite meal. This reason may seem a bit obvious, but you must possess a great deal of passion for baking in order to become a pastry chef. You must be dedicated to your job, highly creative, and detail-oriented in order to make beautiful breads, cakes, and other pastries.
2. You’re a morning person. Ever wonder how all those pastries can be ready when a bakery opens? Pastry chefs usually have to wake up at 3 or 4am in order to get started on baking for the day, and they often continue for eight hours. Your passion for baking must be what gets you up each morning.
3. You like coming up with new ideas. Pastry chefs are often required to come up with new recipes and unique designs for their pastry creations. You’ll have to have a sophisticated knowledge of baking ingredients and willingness to experiment, as well as an artistic touch for decoration.
4. You have an eye for detail. From adorable bite-size pastries to three-tier wedding cakes, you’ll have to be quite detail-oriented as a pastry chef. Part of what makes professionally-baked desserts so good is the perfect details.
5. You’re always asked to bring dessert. If you’re known for your amazing desserts at parties and family gatherings, chances are that you have the talent and passion for baking. If others can recognize that talent, you’ll certainly become a successful pastry chef who can make customers happy.
6. You like to make others happy with your baking. Few jobs allow the immediate gratification of customer satisfaction like that of a pastry chef. You can pull a tray of gooey chocolate cookies out of the oven and watch customers drool over the yummy goodness two minutes later.
7. You can make the most out of your education. You should note that your level of education will have a significant role in where you end up. If you imagine yourself as the executive pastry chef in an expensive restaurant, you should seriously consider attending a top-tier pastry school. However, if you want to own your own wedding cake business, you may only need to get training at a part-time school or community college. I’m not saying one job is better than the other, but seeing as the field is competitive, a four-star restaurant will only choose the top candidates. Nevertheless, with a passion for baking you can make the most out of any level of education.
8. You really, really love baking. Meaning, you’re willing to wake up before dawn, spend eight hours on your feet in intense concentration, and earn a salary lower than most white-collar jobs, all for your love of baking. I don’t want to turn you away from the job, but it’s important to know what you’re getting into if you want to be a pastry chef. But if you have the passion and the talent to please others with your delectable creations, then you should seriously consider becoming a pastry chef!
